Dato’ Professor Dr Hashim Yaacob was appointed the eighth Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya on April 1, 2003. Born in Tanah Merah, Kelantan in 1949, he had his early education in Tanah Merah and Kuala Krai, Kelantan as well as MARA Institute of Technology, Petaling Jaya. He obtained his BDS from the University of Otago, New Zealand in 1974, MSc from University of London in 1978, Fellow in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FDSRCPS Glasg) in 1986 and Diploma in Islamic Studies (DIS) from the International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM) in 1992.
He was conferred Fellow in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FDSRCS Eng Ad eundem) in 1995, the Foundation Fellow of the Faculty of Oral Pathology of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, Australia (FFOPRCPA) in 1996, the CBiol, MlBiol (Chartered Biologist) by the Institute of Biology, United Kingdom in 1996, and the Fellow of the Academy of Sciences, Malaysia (FASc) in 2000.
He has held several high-ranking positions prior to his appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya. He was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs (2001-2003); member of the University of Malaya Council; Senate member and member of the Promotion Panel for the posts of professor and associate professor. He was also the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry (1987-1989; 1994-2001), the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry (1983-1986) and the Head of Department of Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine and Periodontology, Faculty of Dentistry (1980 – 1983).Presently, he is a Captain in the Royal Malaysian Navy Reserve Forces.
Throughout his academic and professional career, he has contributed significantly to his discipline of Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine and to the University. His outstanding academic achievements were recognised in 1987 when he obtained his professorship in the year 1987. During his tenure as the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, he was also responsible in raising the standard of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree programme by obtaining recognition from the General Dental Council of the United Kingdom in 1997.
Being an active researcher internationally, he has received several distinguished awards which include the Gold and Silver Awards (with his co-researchers) for the scientific invention of a pharmaceutical product called Remopain at the International Invention competition in Geneva in 2001. His research interests are in the fields of facial pain and oral diseases.
Besides academic concerns, he is also very much in touch with his roots. He is involved in the appreciation and preservation of the arts, especially Malay literature (poetry) and the Kelantanese culture such as the silat and wayang kulit. An accomplished literary figure, he has written and edited five anthologies of poetry - Air Penawar Sekacang Kelat, Air Manik Astagina, Misi, Tanah Serendah Sekebun Bunga and Aku Hanya Mahu ke Seberang. Three of these books were published by the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. He has also won several prizes for poetry writing at the national level such as the Anugerah Sastera Perdana (2002).

Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail

Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail telah dilahirkan pada 6 Oktober 1955.
Beliau menerima pendidikan undang-undang di Universiti Malaya dan menamatkan pengajian pada tahun 1979.
Beliau memulakan kerjaya dalam Perkhidmatan Kehakiman dan Perundangan Malaysia pada 1980 sebagai Timbalan Pendakwa Raya di Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
Pada tahun 1985, beliau dilantik sebagai Peguam Kanan Persekutuan di Negeri Sabah.
Pada tahun 1994, beliau telah dilantik sebagai Ketua Bahagian Pendakwaan.
Beliau telah dilantik sebagai Ketua Bahagian Penasihat dan Antarabangsa pada tahun 1995.
Pada tahun 1997, beliau telah memegang jawatan sebagai Pesuruhjaya Penyemak Undang-Undang.
Pada tahun 2000, sekali lagi beliau telah dilantik sebagai Ketua Bahagian Pendakwaan.
Pada tahun 2002, beliau telah menerima jawatan sebagai Peguam Negara Malaysia.



Pada 13 Mei 1993, Tan Sri telah dianugerahkan pingat Persekutuan Kesatria Mangku Negara (KSM) oleh Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Pada 1 Julai 1995, DYMM Raja Perlis mengurniakan darjah kebesaran Dato' Paduka Mahkota Perlis (DPMP) yang membawa gelaran Dato'.
Pada 16 September 2001, Tuan Yang Terutama Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah mengurniakan beliau darjah kebesaran Panglima Gemilang Darjah Kinabalu (PGDK) yang membawa gelaran Dato'.
Pada 16 September 2002, Tuan Yang Terutama Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah mengurniakan beliau darjah kebesaran Kelas Pertama Negeri Sabah Seri Panglima Darjah Kinabalu (SPDK) yang membawa gelaran Datuk Seri Panglima.
Pada 30 Mac 2003, Tan Sri telah dianugerahkan Ahli Yang Pertama (Seri Paduka) Bagi Darjah Kebesaran Jiwa Mahkota Kelantan Yang Amat Mulia (SJMK) yang membawa gelaran Datuk Paduka oleh DYMM Sultan Kelantan.
Pada 7 Jun 2003, Tan Sri telah dianugerahkan Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM) yang membawa gelaran Tan Sri oleh Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Pada 13 Disember 2003, Tan Sri telah dianugerahkan Darjah Kebesaran Datuk Setia- Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah(SSIS) yang membawa gelaran Datuk Setia oleh DYMM Sultan Selangor.
Pada 4 Ogos 2005, Tan Sri telah dianugerahkan Panglima Mangku Negara yang membawa gelaran Tan Sri oleh Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Peguam Negara juga merupakan ahli beberapa Badan dan Jawatankuasa yang ditubuhkan menurut Perlembagaan Persekutuan dan undang-undang lain, antaranya .

Profesor Emiritus Datuk Dr. Nik Safiah Karim

Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr. Nik Safiah Karim dilahirkan pada 17 Disember 1939 di kampong Banggol, Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Beliau menerima pendidikan awal di Sekolah Rendah Inggeris Perempuan Kota Bahru (sekarang Sekolah Rendah Zainab), dan kemudian melanjutkan pelajaran ke Maktab Perempuan Melayu, Jalan Damansara, Kuala Lumpur (sekarang Kolej Tunku Kurshiah, Seremban) sehingga tamat Scholl Certificate. Setelah lulus Higher School Certificate pada tahun 1959 di St. Francis Institution, Melaka, beliau melanjutkan pelajaran ke Universiti Malaya sehingga memperolehi Ijazah Sarjana Muda Sastera dengan kepujian dalam bidang Linguistik (1965). Pada tahun 1075, beliau memperolehi ijazah Doktor Falsafah dalam bidang Linguistik dari Ohio University, USA.Kerjaya akademiknya bermula sebagai tutuor di Jabatan Pengajian Melayu, Universiti Malaya pada tahun 1963, diikuti dengan jawatan pensyarah dan professor madya juga di Jabatan yang sama. Beliau kemudiannya dilantik sebagai Professor Pengajian Melayu. Pada tahun 2002, setelah bersara, beliau diberi penghormatan oleh Universiti Melayu melalui pelantikan sebagai Professor Emeritus.Dalam pentadbiran, beliau telah dilantik ke beberapa jawatan, antaranya Dekan Fakulti Sastera dan Sains Sosial sebanyak dua kali (1982-1983 dan 1992-1994), Ketua Jabatan Pengajian Melayu (1984-1986) dan Pengarah pertama Akademi Pengajian Melayu (1990-1992). Pada tahun 1989 hingga 1990, beliau dipinjamkan ke Dewan Bahasa da Pustaka sebagai Timbalan Ketau Pengarah. Beliau telah bersara wajib dari Universiti Malaya pada bulan Disember 1994 tetapi telah disambung secar kontrak dengan memegang Kursi Pengajian Melayu sehingga Disember 1999. beliau seterusnya diiktiraf sebagai Professor Adjing sehingga akhir tahun 2000.Beliau amat aktif dalam badan-badan professional. Beliau menjadi salah seorang pengasas Persatuan Linguistik Malaysia dan pernah menerajuinya sebagai Presiden selama 18 tahun. Kini beliau menjadi penasihat persatuan tersebut.Dalam pergerakan wanita beliau telah mengasaskan dua buah persatuan wanita., iaitu PERTIWI (Pertubuhan Tindakan Wanita Islam) dan Persatauan Siswazah Wanita Malaysia. Dalam PERTIWI, beliau kini menjadi ketua I. Beliau pernah dilantik Naib Yang Dipertua Persatuan Siswazah Wanita Malaysia. Pada tahun 1978 beliau telah dilantik ke majlis Penasihat Kebangsaan bagi Mengintegrasikan Wanita dalam Pembangunan (NACIWID), sebuah badan penasihat tertinggi vagi menasihati kerajaan tentang hal ehwal wanita. Kini nama badan tersebut telah diubah kepada Majlis Penasihat Wanita Negara dan beliau sebagai Pengerusi Majlis itu hingga sekarang.Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr. Nik Safiah terkenal dalam bidang bahasa. Beliau telah menghasilkan belasan buah buku dan ratusan makalah tentang bahasa. Antara buku yang terkenal ialah Tatabahasa Dewan (yang ditulis bersama tiga orang ahli bahasa yang lain), Bahasa Malaysia Syntax, Beberapa persoalan Sosiolinguistik Bahasa Melayu dan Malay Grammar for Academics and Professionals. Beliau menjadi pakar rujuk bahasa bukan sahaja dalam Negara malahan juga diluar Negara. Misalnya oleh Kementerian Pelajaran Singapura dan Kementerian Pelajaran Brunei Darussalam. Beliau telah berkhidmat dalam Lembaga Pengelola Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka selama 14 tahun. Beliau dilantik Ahli Jawantankuasa Tetap Bahasa Melayu (JKTBM) yang mewakili Malaysia di pertemuan Majlis Bahasa Melayu Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia dan Malaysia (MABBIM), dan ahli jemputan dalam Majlis Antarabangsa Bahasa Melayu (MABM). Beliau juga ahli Lembaga Amanah Yayasan Karyawan dan ahli Lembaga Penasihat Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia.Dalam bidang wanita, Datuk Dr. Nik Safiah telah banyak menyumbang, sama ada dalam bentuk penulisan ataupun penyertaan dalam persidangan. Beliau telah menghasilkan beberapa buah buku tentang pengajian wanita dan pada masa kini menjadi pensyarah sambilan di Rancangan Pengajian Gender, Universiti Malaya. Akhir-akhir ini beliau menumpukan perhatian (bersama Dr. Rokiah Talib) terhadap penulisan biografi wanita.Atas jasa dan sumbangannya, beliau telah diberikan anugerah dan bintang. Pada tahun 1989 beliau dikurniakan pingat Kesatria Mangku Negara (KMN), pada tahun 1995 Johan Mangku Negara (JMN) dan pada tahun 1997 Johan Panglima Negara (JPN) yang membawa gelaran Datuk. Beliau telah menerima Anugerah Wanita Cemerlang Tan Sri Fatimah-Avon bagi kecermelangan dalam bidang pendidikan (1995), Anugerah Wanita Cemerlang sempena Perayaan 50 Tahun Maktab Perempuan Melayu/Kolej Tunku Kurshiah (1997), Tokoh Ilmuwan Bahasa (2001), Pingat Emas Tun Fatimah (2001) dan Ijazah Kehormat Doktor Persuratan dari Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (2003).PERNYATAAN PERJUANGANKedudukan dan Kedaulatan Bahasa MelayuBahasa lazimnya berkembang secara evolusi dan mengambil masa yang panjang. Oleh itu, janganlah dilihat perjuangan bahasa dalam masa lima atau sepuluh tahun tetapi sebaliknya dalam konteks puluhan, bahkan, ratusan tahun. Untuk sekian lama, bahasa Melayu telah mengalami perkembangan dan kemajuan yang membanggakan, terutama dalam tahun-tahun selepas tercapainya kemerdekaan. Apa-apa rintangan yang dihadapi sekarang hendaklah dilihat sebagai masalah sementara.Bagi bahasa Melayu, yang penting ialah agar perjuangan untuk mempertahankan kedudukan serta kedaulatannya dijalankan secara berterusan, tanpa jemu-jemu. Sejarah telah membuktikan bahawa bahasa Melayu mampu berperanan dalam pelbagai situasi dan latar. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al - Bukhary

Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar bin Syed Nor Al-Bukhary is one of the corporate figures who is gaining prominence in the Malaysian corporate sector. He was born in 1951 and he started his career in Johor in 1990's. He first started wholesale business dealing in rice and subsequently branched out into other sectors. He is presently one of the most respected Malay corporate figures who has his fingers in a multitude of sectors including plantation, property development, construction, engineering, power generation, infrastructure and ports.
He symbolises a generation of the Malay corporate figures who is capable in leading a number of business conglomerates. His success could be seen when he acquired 90% ownership of Seaport Terminal (Johor) Sdn. Bhd. in 1993. He was able to lay his hands on a mega project when Seaport was awarded a 30-year concession to build and operate the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), that made him a substantial majority shareholder. He was commended by the government for his success in managing PTP and turning it into a vibrant and thriving port in southern Peninsular Malaysia. PTP succeeded in wooing Taiwan Evergreen Marine Corporation, one of the world's major shipping companies to shift its container operations from Singapore to PTP. This move will greatly enhance the Malaysian government's effort to have a number of modern and world-class ports in this region.
Apart from that, he owns 19.9% share in Malaysian Mining Corporation via his wholly-owned company, Syarikat Impian Teladan Sdn. Bhd. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar personally owns SKS Ventures, which was awarded the task of building the site for 2100MW gas-fired power station at Tanjung Bin, Johor. Tan Sri Syed Mohktar has a 32% share in PERNAS through his own company, Syarikat Ratu Jernih. He also has interest in Fiamma Holdings Berhad, whereby 18.68% of the said company is being held by him through his two companies, i.e. Syarikat Perdana Padu Sdn. Bhd. and Corak Kukuh Sdn. Bhd. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar is a Board Member of Syarikat Bina Puri Holdings Berhad, whereby, on his own, he has 7.34% share. Apart from these, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar has varied interest in a number of companies, both in Malaysia as well as abroad.
One project that enhanced his stature in the international arena is the Museum of Islamic Art, Kuala Lumpur, whereby the idea was conceptualized by Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir himself. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar was responsible for luring the famous shopping mall in London, i.e. Harrods, to invest in Malaysia through his company, AmtekHoldings Sdn.Bhd. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar played a major role in the family-owned Al-Bukhary Foundation, whereby he is the Executive Chairman. Through Al-Bukhary Foundation, he has made several contributions towards the social sector, particularly the Islamic social and welfare activities. The foundation is also responsible in constructing the Al-Bukhary Mosque Complex, which is the latest landmark in Kedah.

Tan Sri Prof Dr. Awang Had Salleh

Tan Sri Prof Dr. Awang Had Salleh, was born on 24 June 1934 in Kampung Bagan Pulau Bentong, Pulau Pinang. He received his early education at the Pulau Betung, Balik Pulau Malay School and his secondary education at Seberang Perak Malay School, Kedah. In 1951, he enrolled himself at the Sultan Idris Teachers Training College, Tanjung Malim, Perak and later at the Language Institute, Bukit Senyum, Johor Bharu in 1958. Then, in 1961 he studied at the University of Malaya, where he graduated with Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in 1964 and with a Masters degree in Education from the same university in 1967. Subsequently, he continued his studies further at the Stanford University California, USA where he obtained his doctorate in 1969, specialising in Education and Sociology. He also studied at the University of Lancaster, United Kingdom to enhance his skill and knowledge in the field of Academic Studies and Management.

Apart from being a well-known and active figure in the academic world, Tan Sri Prof. also produced some creative works. 1966 happen to be his most important year in his writing career of which two of his works, 'Merah, Kuning Biru' (anthology of short stories) and 'Biru Warna' (novel) were published a book form. His works on drama 'Buat Menyapu Si Air Mata' was published in 1975. In the field of writing and publishing, he has produced a number of books, articles and working papers which focussed more on education, language and culture.
In appreciation of his services and contributions, he was bestowed several awards which, among others, include the Johan Mangku Negara (J.M.N.) in 1975, the Dato' Setia DiRaja Kedah (D.S.D.K) in 1978 which carries the title Dato' and the Panglima Setia Mahkota (P.S.M.) in 1982, which carries the title of Tan Sri, from DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong. In appreciation of his contributions in the field of education, he was awarded the 'Honorary fellow' A.B.E, United Kingdom in 1983, the 'Honorary Doctor of Law' by University of Brock, the 'Honorary Doctor of Letters' by the National University of Malaysia (UKM) and 'Professor Emeritus' by the Northern University of Malaysia (UUM). He was also conferred the 'Distinguished Follow of ISIS' Malaysia.

Sheikh Ahmed Hoosen Deedat

Sheikh Ahmed Hoosen Deedat was Born on the 01 July 1918 in the Surat district of India in 1918. His father emigrated to South Africa in 1927 with him. Ahmed Deedat was a very bright student and excelled in school. Lack of finance interrupted his schooling and at an early age of 16 he took on the first of many jobs in retailing and short assistant.
After reading a book called Izharul Haq – The Truth revealed, a book about a debate with Christian Missionaries in the then British India, Sheikh Deedat was spurred on in the direction of Dawah – Islamic Missionary Activity to halt the tide of the then Christian onslaught against Islam.Over the next four decades, he immersed himself into a host of activities. Conducting Bible classes, lectures and debates the world over. He established the first Islamic Seminary in Southern Africa to train propagators at Assalaam educational Institute - Braemar.
He is the founder of the largest Islamic Dawah Organization in the world, the Islamic Propagation Center International and became its president.
He has published more than 20 books and distributed millions of copies of FREE literature and pamphlets the world over. Many of Sheikh Deedat’s publications have been translated into the many different languages of the world : Russian, Urdu, Arabic, Bengali, Bangladeshi, French, Amharic, Chinese, Japanese, Mayalam, Indonesian,, Zulu , Afrikaans, Dutch, Norwegian amongst others.He delivered thousands of lectures all over the world, crossing all the continents and successfully engaging some of the biggest names in Christian evangelists in public debates. Sheikh Deedat’s debates and lectures are available all over the world in the various languages in Video and DVD format.
His career in the field of Comparative Religion took him across all five continents and dialogue with the heads of the Protestant world in America and the late Pope John Paul.So fearless was his stand in defending the truth that Sheikh Deedat was refused entry into France and Nigeria on the pretext that ‘ he would cause a civil unrest’.Sheikh Deedat also received a personal phone call at the IPCI from former President Nelson Mandela who was in Saudi Arabia at the time, congratulating Deedat for his international icon status in the Muslim World.
He was awarded the prestigious King Faisal Award in 1986 for his sterling services to Islam in the field of Propagation.
May Almighty Allah bless his soul, accept his efforts for the cause of da’wah and grant gracious patience to his loved ones during this trying time.
His funeral will leave his house 49 Trevenen Road, Lotusville Verulam at 5 pm. Proceeding to the Wick Street Musjid and after Magrib Salah / Prayer , he will be laid to rest in the Verulam Muslim Cemetery.

Dato' Dr. Haji Mohd. Fadzilah Kamsah dilahirkan pada 16 Julai 1951 di Sg. Pinang, Klang. Beliau adalah pengarah urusan Excel Training & Consultancy (M) Sdn. Bhd. dan ketua pengarah di ETC Communications Sdn. Bhd. Beliau pernah memegang jawatan timbalan pengarah di PPPL, UPM dari tahun 1993 hingga September 1993.
